Syringe Manual

Please read through this manual for information on everyday use, priming, dispensing, cleaning, and storage of your syringe. See esyringe®'s disclaimer for more information on this manual.

Everyday Use Guide

1) Examine Syringe

Inspect syringe for damage, check for cracks in the barrel, burrs on needle point, etc. Do not use a needle with burrs. Replace damaged syringe with new syringe.

2) Holding

Grip the syringe carefully on the flange. Temperature fluctuations due to user's body temperature can cause errors and variations in results. Avoid this by holding the syringe by the flange and plunger.

Never touch the tip or seal with your fingers.

3) Priming

To insert plunger for the first time, wet tip. A dry teflon tip on glass will reduce the lifespan of the syringe greatly. If plunger is already inserted, fill syringe with sample.

Trapped air in the syringe can cause variations in results. This air can be removed with proper priming: Alternately draw and dispense the solution until all air bubbles are gone. A second method for removing trapped air is to draw sample into barrel, point syringe upward until all bubbles rise to the opening. Then dispense the bubbles and solution.

Clean syringe with lint-free cloth. Do not come in contact with needle opening.

"Seasoning" your syringe for initial use:

  • Stroking a syringe in and out without any liquid inside will severely shorten the syringe's lifespan. Never touch the tip or seal with your fingers.
  • Glass Barrel and Plastic Tip syringe: Before inserting plunger, the tip and inside of barrel should be wetted with tapwater or the fluid it will be handling.
  • Plastic Barrel and Plastic Tip syringe: Before inserting the plunger, the plunger should be wetted with tapwater or the fluid it will be handling.

4) Dispense

Slightly draw more sample than needed and dispense excess slowly. Dispense correct volume of sample into appropriate holder.

5) Cleaning

Rinse syringe with appropriate cleaning solution (cleaning solution depends on what the syringe has been handling). Be cautious, some chemical compounds are fire and explosion hazards. Check with supervisor before deciding on a cleaner. Cleaning fluid is typically DI (deionized) water and a soap product.

Remove plunger and place all parts in an ultrasonic cleaner or sink with cool water and a diluted soap product (approved by your supervisor). Visually inspect the syringe for breaks and obstructions.

Flush syringe with chosen cleaning solution as needed. Air dry and store according to step six.

6) Storing

After syringe has air dried, store in original styrofoam container for protection. Syringe can be stored with plunger inserted in barrel, or separately inside container. If syringe will be stored for a long period of time, remove plunger before storing.

Short Term Storage (less than six months):

  • If unused, leave assembled and place in original container.
  • If used, clean the barrel and tip and store in original container not assembled (plunger not inside barrel).

Long Term Storage (more than six months):

  • If unused, and tip is pre-lubricated, remove plunger from barrel and store both pieces in original box not assembled.
  • If unused, and tip is not pre-lubricated, immerse entire syringe in cool water, try to get water into both ends of barrel and pull out plunger. Store both pieces in original box not assembled (plunger not inside barrel).
  • If used, remove plunger, clean the barrel and tip and store in original container not assembled (plunger not inside barrel).
